Spain: Sixty-Year-Old Mountaineer Rescued After Fall on Glaciar Aneto

On September 1, 2024, emergency services were alerted through the 112 emergency number about a severe accident involving a 60-year-old mountaineer on Glaciar Aneto, one of Spain's most challenging peaks located in the Pyrenees. The climber had suffered a fall and subsequent slide down a slope, necessitating an immediate rescue operation.
The rescue team, consisting of the GREIM Benasque, the Benasque Air Unit, and a medical team from the 061 emergency service, was dispatched to the scene. Due to adverse weather conditions, the initial rescue efforts were complicated, requiring the team to spend the night with the injured mountaineer and two companions who were with him at the time of the accident.
By early the next morning, conditions had improved enough to allow for an evacuation. The injured climber, along with his two companions, was airlifted to the helipad in Benasque. Here, the seriously injured mountaineer was transferred to a 112 helicopter for immediate transport to the Miguel Servet Hospital in Zaragoza.
