Heavy rain and strong gusts battered planes as Typhoon Yagi struck Hong Kong International Airport yesterday evening, September 5.

Footage shows a vehicle coming to a halt due to significantly reduced visibility.

Authorities reported that 38 flights were cancelled at the country's airport on Thursday. Trading on the stock market, bank services, and schools were also halted after the city's weather authority raised Typhoon Signal No 8.

With maximum sustained winds of 245 kilometres per hour near its eye, Yagi is the second-most powerful tropical cyclone of 2024 so far, after the Category 5 Atlantic hurricane Beryl.

The powerful typhoon moved south of Hong Kong and is heading towards neighbouring Communist China, where it was expected to make landfall on Friday.

Earlier this week, Typhoon Yagi lashed the Philippines, causing at least 13 fatalities.
