An elaborate Thai funeral used a puppet on a zipline to set off Catherine wheel fireworks.

Relatives organised the pyrotechnics during a Buddhist burial ceremony for their granfather in Chiang Rai, Thailand on September 8.

Footage shows a handmade figure of a male dressed in traditional clothing holding a torch while being lowered on a sloping cable that leads to the pinwheel.

When the flames touched the firecrackers, they erupted in a grand display of rotating sparklers.

Grandson Boom Natnarun said: ‘It has always been a tradition here in the north to organise a magnificent funeral so we can send off our loved ones with dignity.'

Buddhist devotees sometimes throw colourful send-offs for their loved ones as they believe it will aid their passenger into the afterlife.
