The U.S. Coast Guard has released new underwater footage of the Titan submersible, revealing the catastrophic failure that occurred during its expedition.

Footage captured by a remote-operated vehicle shows the remains of the aft dome, aft ring, remnants of the pressure hull, and extensive carbon fibre debris, offering definitive proof of the implosion that resulted in the deaths of all five passengers on board. The video was publicly issued on Wednesday, September 18.

The Titan's remains were reportedly found around 330 yards from the Titanic's bow, some 435 miles south of St. John's, Newfoundland.

Footage of the wreck is being used as evidence in the Coast Guard Marine Board of Investigation's ongoing two-week inquiry into the submersible's implosion. The hearing began on Monday, September 16.

The inquiry will feature testimony from 24 witnesses, including former OceanGate employees, to determine the cause of the tragic incident.

The Titan, operated by OceanGate, is believed to have imploded on June 18, 2023, during an expedition to the Titanic wreck site, resulting in the immediate deaths of five people on board. The victims included Stockton Rush, the CEO of OceanGate; British businessman Hamish Harding; British-Pakistani billionaire Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman Dawood; and French diver Paul-Henri Nargeolet.

The sinking of the RMS Titanic in 1912 remains one of the most famous maritime disasters in history. There are a number of theories as to why the vessel sank, but the official conclusion remains that the Titanic sank due to a combination of human error, design flaws, and an unfortunate iceberg collision.
