This is the shocking moment a tapir wandered into a jewellery shop in Indonesia.

The mammal ransacked and damaged items inside the building in the middle of the night in Kepahiyang Regency, Bengkulu, on July 28.

Footage shows the animal hiding on the second floor of the establishment, causing commotion among nearby residents. The encounter prompted locals to call the authorities for immediate retrieval of the animal.

Head of the Conservation Section for Region I of the Bengkulu Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA), Said Jauhari, said: 'We have evacuated the tapir, and we will take it to a wildlife rehabilitation centre.'

The tapir is closely related to horses and rhinos and is one of the protected animals in the country, classified as a threatened species.

They are known to be meek and gentle animals. However, if threatened, like any other animals, they can attack without warning.
