The powerful Typhoon Krathon lashes through the northern part of the Philippines as it moved towards Taiwan.

Footage shows coconut trees being battered by strong winds and heavy rain in Cagayan province today, September 30.

Krathon, locally named Julian, has maximum sustained winds of 175 km/h and an increased gustiness of up to 240 km/h from the previous 215 km/h.

It forced thousands to evacuate, damaging homes and crops, but local authorities have not reported any immediate casualties yet.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said in a briefing: ‘Julian may intensify into a supertyphoon.' Under the agency's classification, a super typhoon has maximum sustained winds of 185km/h.

The typhoon is expected to move over to the Bashi Channel, which is located between the Philippines and Taiwan.
