Police chase koala through train station in Sydney
Amusing CCTV footage shows police chasing a koala through a train station in Sydney, Australia.
The marsupial was spotted by a security guard roaming around Casula railway station early on October 4 morning.
Upon noticing the tree-dwelling marsupial, the guard on duty informed approaching train operators to slow down when passing the station amid fears the animal could be hurt.
CCTV footage shows the bear crawling beneath a fence onto a platform. It then walked next to the edge of the ground, past the yellow line, and wandered towards the stairs.
A passerby even took a picture of the koala resting on the stairway.
Moments later, policemen escorted the animal out of the station and back to the nearby woodland. Officials said the critter was unharmed and remained calm.
Australia is home to a large koala population, which is facing habitat threats due to urban development encroaching on their homes.
The government said it has invested 891,930 AUD (600,000 USD) into Southwest Sydney to restore habitats and track koalas to prevent roadkill.
Local media reported that the strategy also targets 18 other koala populations across the state, backed by a total investment of 15.7 million USD.
