US: FEMA Springs into Action for Hurricane Helene's Aftermath in North Carolina
Chimney Rock, United States - October 10, 2024
In the wake of Hurricane Helene's destructive path, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has set up a mobile assistance hub just miles outside the flood-ravaged town of Chimney Rock. This strategic location aims to offer immediate support to those whose lives have been upturned by the devastating floods.
As of October 10, 2024, FEMA workers have been diligently registering survivors into the system to facilitate financial aid and other crucial assistance. The area, still reeling from the hurricane's impact, presents scenes of both despair and recovery: heavy machinery clearing debris, collapsed bridges, and a marina choked with the storm's remnants.
Simultaneously, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has rolled out the Emergency Power Team, installing generators at vital infrastructure like hospitals and emergency services centers. These efforts are part of a broader coordination led by the Pittsburgh District of USACE, which has swiftly deployed teams across the nation to aid in North Carolina's recovery within 48 hours of the disaster.
USACE, alongside 261 personnel and additional contractor support, has been pivotal in this response, working in tandem with local, state, and federal entities. The Temporary Emergency Power Planning and Response Team, composed of mixed personnel from various districts and military units, has already installed over 20 generators and assessed over 40 locations for further power needs.
The Wilmington District of USACE oversees the relief operations in North Carolina, executing FEMA missions to support the western part of the state.
