This is the terrifying moment an elephant being ridden at an Indian festival went berserk and began attacking cars injuring one devotee.

Footage shows the animal rampaging through a market area with three locals precariously perched on its back in the Saran district, Bihar, on October 12. Onlookers fled in all directions, shouting in panic as chaos erupted.

Authorities reported that the elephant has wreaked havoc during a Dussehra fair for nearly two hours. But organisers continue to use the beast.

Upon receiving reports of the disturbance, law enforcement officials arrived at the scene but struggled to regain control.

A mahout successfully guided the enraged jumbo to a private garden, where efforts were made to calm him down.

The distressed bull was safely secured to a tree to prevent further chaos. Representatives from the forest department also arrived to assess the situation.

Police stated that the elephant caused damage to several vehicles during its rampage. One person was injured and was taken to the hospital where they are reportedly in a stable condition.

Dussehra, or Vijayadashami, is a major Hindu festival celebrated in India. The festival marks the end of Navratri, a nine-night celebration dedicated to Goddess Durga. Dussehra typically occurs in September or October and commemorates Lord Rama's victory over the demon king Ravana, as the Ramayana recounts.

Elephants have long been a part of Indian festivities and temples. Revered as symbols of Lord Ganesha, they are believed to bring luck and prosperity. Their presence in processions and rituals enhances the ceremonial grandeur, reflecting a rich cultural heritage and tradition.

However, animal rights groups continue to campaign for laws banning the use of elephants in antiquated traditions due to the poor treatment they often experience.
