Fisherman rescued by helicopter from boat on verge of sinking off China's east coast
On October 15, near the waters of Wafangdian City, Dalian, Liaoning Province, a fishing boat was on the verge of sinking due to strong winds and waves, putting a fisherman in danger.
The North Sea Rescue Bureau of the Ministry of Transport received a rescue request from the Liaoning Maritime Search and Rescue Center and dispatched the "B-7312" rescue helicopter stationed in Dalian to carry out the mission.
Upon arrival, the crew found the situation critical. Strong northerly winds (force 8) created massive waves, and the distressed fisherman was clinging tightly to the swaying mast, suffering from hypothermia. Most of the fishing boat had already sunk. The lack of a conventional hoisting point added immense difficulty to the rescue.
In response, the crew quickly assessed the situation. The pilot manoeuvred the helicopter to hover above the distressed vessel, and a rescuer grabbed the mast's top in the midst of the swaying, sliding down to the fisherman. The rescuer secured himself by wrapping his legs around the mast, freeing his hands to attach the fisherman to the rescue equipment. Through a high-risk hoisting operation, they successfully lifted the fisherman to safety and transported him to a nearby dock.
This rescue marked a pioneering operation by the North Sea Rescue Bureau, as the crew successfully performed a mast-hoisting manoeuvre without a conventional lifting point.
