Oddly terrifying Balinese ritual enthralls tourists
An oddly terrifying Balinese ritual enthralled tourists with their depiction of a monkey-looking god.
Footage shows the performer dressed as Hanuman in a white suit, golden headdress, and a mask that resembled a primate in Bali, Indonesia, on October 24.
The ritual performance called the Kecak fire dance, was performed to honour Hindu deities and was attended by hundreds, of locals and tourists watching from raised seats.
It was held near the beach with the monkey god being carried by three servants across the ground where burning wood had been scattered.
Local Gede Suanda said: 'The kecak fire dance tells the story of Ramayana, a holy epic.'
Kecak is deeply rooted in Balinese culture and is often performed during religious ceremonies and cultural events. It tells stories from the Hindu epic, the Ramayana.
Balinese Hinduism is a unique form rooted in Indian Hinduism that was introduced to Indonesia through trade and cultural exchange. It is heavily influenced by indigenous animistic and ancestor worship traditions, creating a distinct blend of spirituality.
