Transformer explodes amid super typhoon damaging passing car
This is the terrifying moment an electrical transformer explodes during Super Typhoon Fung-wong, sending electrical flashes and debris striking a passing car.
Footage captured by Benjie Atienza Benavente from inside his vehicle shows him driving during the storm in the Philippines.
Moments later, the power unit exploded without warning, showering the highway in Quezon City, Manila, with burning fragments.
Benjie said: 'At around 8:20 in the morning, while I was driving along Aurora Boulevard from Gilmore approaching Broadway, Quezon City, a sudden explosion occurred from a MERALCO transformer, or an electrical arc flash, allegedly caused by the heavy rains and strong winds brought by Super Typhoon Fung-wong.
'The explosion emitted burning debris and electrical flashes, which struck my vehicle and caused harm to its exterior surfaces.'
No injuries were reported, but Benjie said the incident caused damage to his nearly two-month-old car on November 10.
The vehicle sustained dents and marks on its windows, windshield, and body from the flying debris.
Fung-wong was the biggest storm to threaten the Philippines this year, with a 1,600-kilometre (994 miles) rain and wind band that covered nearly two-thirds of the archipelagic nation.
Locally known as 'Uwan', it made landfall as a super typhoon in Aurora province on the evening of November 9, prompting the evacuation of nearly a million residents.
The Office of Civil Defence said at least 18 people were killed while 2.4 million were displaced in the onslaught as Fung-wong triggered large storm surges and widespread flooding.
