Footage shows thick smog shrouding Delhi City in northern India on October 27.

The Central Pollution Control Board said the air quality index (AQI) in Delhi and surrounding areas reached 361 or 'very poor'. The city ranked as the worst in the world, just above Chiang Mai in Thailand, which has similar issues with chronic air pollution.

Air pollution in Delhi remains among the worst in the world, with particulate matter levels regularly surpassing safe limits, especially in winter due to crop burning, vehicle emissions, and industrial pollution.

The extreme pollution comprised of PM2.5 particles poses severe health risks to residents, contributing to respiratory and cardiovascular issues and reducing life expectancy.
