Schoolchildren surprised their teacher with a pet chicken as a gift.

The youngsters gave a bouquet of flowers and a stuffed toy to teacher Gem Villanueva during class, and while she was on her way to the faculty, they handed her the live bird in Misamis Oriental province, the Philippines, on October 18.

Footage shows the kids calling Gem, who initially thought they were only going to give her more treats.

However, Gem was stunned when she saw the chicken with a pink bow tied around its neck.

The teacher laughed and hesitated at first but accepted the adorable animal, which she would raise at home.

She said: 'They are such sweet kids. They knew my love for animals and I was touched with their gift even if I did not expect it.'

In the Philippines, Teachers' Day is celebrated on October 5, aligning with World Teachers' Day, as recognised by UNESCO. However, celebrations often extend throughout the month to honour teachers.
