Sudan has proposed a joint mechanism to ensure the safe continued opening of the Adre crossing between Sudan and Chad.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Arabic): SALWA ADAM BENYA, Sudan's humanitarian aid commissioner
"We have presented a proposal to meet demands on the formation of a committee or a mechanism comprising Sudan, the United Nations, and Chad, to facilitate procedures and monitor what enters Sudan."

Benya renewed Sudan's commitment to facilitating the flow of humanitarian aid.

SOUNDBITE 2 (Arabic): SALWA ADAM BENYA, Sudan's humanitarian aid commissioner
"The government always allows aid to reach any Sudanese citizen in any location, and we have correspondences with OCHA (UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs) to continue the work of the crossing, but the requirements must be fulfilled."

The Adre crossing is one of the most important land crossings in western Sudan. The crossing is the most effective and direct cross-border route to deliver humanitarian assistance to Sudan at the scale and speed required to respond to the enormous hunger crisis in the country.

The crossing is scheduled to close on November 15 after being temporarily reopened by the Sudanese government on August 20.
