This Olive Ridley was found entangled in a ghost net (abandoned fishing net) with one flipper missing and the other hanging by a tendon. Unfortunately the remaining front flipper had to be amputated to save the turtle from fatal infection. This video was taken after 1 week in rehabilitation and the secretions from the eyes give the impression of a crying turtle. In fact this is a natural process whereby sea turtles secrete salt from the eyes and nostrils to regulate hydration.

Every year it is estimated that around 640, 000 tons of ghost gear are lost globally. Ghost gear is responsible for killing thousands of animals each year and many go unnoticed for many months, the lucky ones get found but many do not.
