A mountain lion that was trapped in a tree in a family's yard was rescued in California.

The big cat wandered into a village and climbed up the hardwood before residents called for help in Tustin on November 13.

Footage shows the animal being shot by a tranquiliser before it was safely extracted by officers and biologists from the Fish and Wildlife Department.

It was given a health check and taken into a truck before being transported to an animal centre.

The mountain lion was relocated to the facility and later released back into the wild unhurt.
