This is the terrifying moment torrential rain and gale-force winds swept through a train station in China.

Locals were battered by Typhoon Tiantu's powerful gusts and heavy rainfall at Shantou Railway Station in Guangdong on November 14.

Footage shows residents clinging to the pillars of the platform's waiting area, while others sought refuge behind columns as the winds battered the station.

Local reports said that the typhoon made landfall near the northeastern coast of the Luzon Islands in the Philippines on the afternoon of November 13, with wind speeds exceeding 185 km/h.

As the typhoon progressed, it triggered severe wind and rain across the coastal regions of Fujian, Guangdong, and Zhejiang.

Authorities urged residents to stay indoors and evacuate when necessary.

China and its neighbouring countries are at the start of their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms. The rudimentary infrastructure often struggles with the deluge, leading to widespread flash floods.
