Russian plane catches fire when it lands in Turkey
A Russian plane caught fire as it landed in an airport in Turkey on Sunday evening.
The Sukhoi Superjet 100 aircraft, registered as RA-89085, with 95 people on board burst into flames while arriving at the Antalya International Airport in southern Turkey at around 9:34 pm local time on November 24.
The jet had been carrying 89 passengers and six crew members on Azimuth Airlines flight A45051 travelling from Sochi, Russia to Antalya, Turkey.
Footage shows bright orange flames flashing from the left side of the plane as terrified passengers evacuated with their luggage on an emergency slide. Huge smoke plumes billowed from the scene as firefighters doused one of the plane's engines amid blaring sirens.
The Turkish transport ministry said the pilot had made an emergency call as the plane was landing. The fire was immediately extinguished with no one hurt. However, arrivals at the airport were temporarily suspended as the damaged plane was removed from the runway.
Antalya deputy governor Suat Seyitoglu said: 'All passengers were evacuated without injury, and thankfully no one was harmed.'
Azimuth Airlines blamed the rough landing on wind shear. Russian aviation authority Rosaviatsiya said the cause of the fire was being investigated.
The Turkish Meteorological Service had issued a severe weather warning in the region before the incident.
