STORYLINE:

In Windhoek, the capital of Namibia, a significant amount of waste is produced, with the main municipality generating about 84,520 tonnes annually.

According to the City of Windhoek Municipal Report for the financial year 2022/2023, about 17 hectares of the landfill designated for solid waste disposal have been used up.

To address the growing waste problem, a Namibian entrepreneur is repurposing old tires into furniture, taking decisive action to protect the environment.

"One of them (my expectations) is to be able to transform the Namibian mind. Let us think sustainability, let us think recycling. I mean the world today is speaking one language which is sustainability and it can be tackled from different ends. So, I am leaning more on to, besides just producing the furniture, let's change the minds of the Namibians to be able to recognize and embrace the importance of recycling so that we are able to sustain ourselves, and also in the process improve our own lifestyles."

Uapingene-Masule founded Mbemuus' Furniture Solutions in 2020.

She collects tires for free from the Kupferberg Landfill Site, having obtained a permit from the City of Windhoek's Solid Waste Management Department.

Since starting her business, she has repurposed more than 100 items from used tires, significantly reducing liter.

Moses Matyayi, chief executive officer of the City of Windhoek, said such initiatives significantly contribute to ongoing efforts to improve solid waste management and maintain cleanliness in the city.
