STORYLINE:
The air quality in New Delhi, India's capital, deteriorated to the "severe" category on Tuesday, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) hitting 421.
The situation worsened late Monday night as the AQI crossed the 400 mark, primarily due to stagnant wind conditions that trapped pollutants in the atmosphere.
The Graded Response Action Plan-4 (GRAP-4) measures, the strictest in winter air pollution control strategy, include a ban on construction activities, restrictions on polluting trucks carrying non-essential goods into the capital, and shifting school classes to a hybrid mode, except for grades X and XII.
Data from the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR) India indicated most monitoring stations in Delhi recorded AQI levels above 400, reflecting a grim scenario.
Residents are advised to limit outdoor activities, as authorities scramble to mitigate the crisis. The situation underscores the pressing need for long-term solutions to Delhi's perennial air quality woes.
