STORYLINE:

An American art delegation recently attended a series of cultural exchange activities in China's Hebei Province.

Most of the members are from the Great Wall Youth Orchestra, a program launched in 1995 with a purpose to teach Chinese music to K-12 students in Oakland.

The delegation visited a museum in Zhengding County and learned about different forms of operas in China.

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): TYLER DANIEL THOMPSON, Member of the Great Wall Youth Orchestra
"I'm learning a lot as I'm watching. They're just so amazing to hear because it takes a lot of skills. Even for someone who was trained to sing like me, I could not even hold a candle to these people. It is amazing what they're doing."

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): VICTOR STANSON SIU, Conductor of the Great Wall Youth Orchestra
"I really enjoy coming to China each time and hearing all the new Chinese music that's going on. So I love hearing the new Chinese arrangements. I love seeing young Chinese musicians. I love how the Chinese are approaching Chinese traditional music. I would like to take some of that back with me."

SOUNDBITE 3 (English): BRIAN CHOW, Member of the Great Wall Youth Orchestra
"I play the erhu (a bowed, two-stringed Chinese instrument). I'm from America. I like performing the music, especially very traditional music. And then I found this orchestra when I was in college, so I joined them to continue my studies. Our members are very diverse. We have a lot of non-Chinese members. Sometimes they sing in Chinese as well. So I think it's a good opportunity to spread Chinese music to other parts of the world."
