Los Angeles, United States - January 12, 2025 Storyline: The American Red Cross has been providing wide-ranging support to Californians affected by one of the state's most devastating wildfire disasters. Since the blazes erupted on Tuesday, more than 36,000 acres have been scorched, over 10,000 structures destroyed, and at least 24 lives lost, with another at least 16 still unaccounted for. According to Betsy Robertson, national spokeswoman for the American Red Cross, the organization has taken proactive measures to support the evacuees. As so many residents suffer painful losses, the spokeswoman emphasized that the Red Cross stands ready to assist with psychiatric well-being and care. Although the evacuations may conclude soon, the healing process for the local community may take a much longer time, Robertson noted. Shotlist: Los Angeles, California, USA - Jan 9, 2025: 1. I'm right now at the Westfield community center, where there was a population of almost 200 overnight. And it's our responsibility and our goal to make sure that regardless of resources, that anyone who is experiencing the effects of this disaster is not doing it alone. So they are sleeping, being fed, cared for, and we're just really making sure that we're taking care of those immediate needs in this uncertain time." 3. You'll first have shock and then trauma, and it comes in waves as people watch the news and get the updates about what's happening in their communities. Maybe they learn the fate of their home, or a friend or a family member. So Red Cross volunteers, we have an entire cohort that is trained in mental health and they are here to listen, to provide support." Los Angeles, California, USA - Jan 8, 2025: 5. We know that evacuations are still taking place, the fires are not out yet, and so we are focused right now on just caring for the immediate needs. As that evolves, this is going to be a complex recovery. And the Red Cross will start working individually with the community members who have experienced a loss.
