A baby boy dumped in fields with tall grass was found alive in the Philippines.

The newborn still had its umbilical cord when residents saw him on the dirt ground in South Cotabato province on January 11.

Footage shows the foundling without clothes huddled on an old sack as shocked locals shouted for rescue.

One of the good Samaritans lifted the baby and put him in a cloth. She said: 'Oh no, baby, I am so sorry.'

The baby boy was silent and did not cry, appearing weak. He was rushed to the hospital where he was tended to by medics.

The newborn was generally healthy after the rescue, and police are now looking for his parents.

Village chief Rogen Ermitano said: 'We are now searching who dumped the baby boy there. His parents could be teenagers who did not know what to do. We are looking into it.'

The youngster will remain under the care of social workers during investigation.
