London, United Kingdom - January 13, 2025 In a bold act of protest, two Just Stop Oil supporters spray-painted Charles Darwin’s grave at Westminster Abbey this morning, declaring, “1.5 Is Dead.” The message referred to recent news that global temperatures have exceeded the critical 1.5°C limit set by world leaders in the 2015 Paris Agreement, signaling an imminent climate disaster. The activists, one of whom is 66-year-old retired teaching assistant Alyson Lee, and 77-year-old former CEO Di Bligh, emphasized the urgency of phasing out fossil fuels by 2030 to prevent further environmental destruction. They cited record-breaking temperatures and widespread environmental collapse, including California’s devastating wildfires, as stark evidence of the accelerating climate crisis. “We are already heading for over 3 degrees of warming, which will destroy everything we hold dear,” said Lee. “The world is on the brink of mass extinction, and the government’s plans are inadequate to halt this devastation.” The protest comes as 2024 is confirmed to be the hottest year on record, with temperatures surpassing the 1.5°C threshold above pre-industrial levels. The activists’ actions also coincide with deadly wildfires in California, now claiming at least 24 lives, as climate change exacerbates extreme weather patterns worldwide.
