Tourists unexpectedly end up with 20 children in the back of their pickup truck
Two Brits had an unexpected adventure on holiday in Thailand after driving nearly 20 children in the back of their hired pickup truck.
Sophie Hinton, 29, and Ella Chandler, 24, were visiting the Cambodian Kids Care Centre on Koh Chang island when the staff
tasked them to take the kids to a local water park.
Ella, a car saleswoman from Manchester, said: "We were literally just popping in to see the school."
"Next thing we know, I was driving a truck full of kids! "
"It was absolutely crazy."
The school had planned the trip to Koh Chang Paradise Resort and Spa for Thailand's National Children's Day but was short on transportation.
With no time to hesitate, the duo, on their five-week backpacking trip, jumped into the driver's seat.
Sophie, a product manager from Manchester, said: "Back home, this would never happen."
"But in Thailand, kids sitting in the back of a truck is totally normal."
"They were very well behaved. They sat calmly and we drove very slowly to ensure their safety."
The Cambodian Kids Care Centre provides food, education, and safety for children of migrant workers, many of whom would otherwise be left home alone or taken to dangerous worksites.
Sophie said: "The man who runs it, Uan Apipanpong, has dedicated 20 years of his life to this school."
"He's 70 years old and works tirelessly to give these kids a chance at a better future. "
"Without him, they'd be left home alone or taken to unsafe construction sites with their parents." "
After a day of splashing around at the water park, the adventure continued as Sophie and Ella drove the kids back home.
Sophie said; "They'd knock on the truck when it was their stop, like a little bus service!"
"Some were as young as five crossing the road alone. "
"That was scarier than the truck ride so I got out to help."
The duo said the experience was unforgettable.
Ella said: "It was stressful, hilarious and heart-warming all at once."
"We only went for a quick visit and now we've got a story we'll be telling for years."
