Meet the "cartoon-like" baby who was born with a full mop of hair - so luscious it's mistaken for a wig."

Ruby Jean, one, surprised everyone when she arrived with over an inch of jet black hair.

Parents Anjel Murphy, 33, and her husband, Matt, 29, a musician, adore their adopted daughter's locks and have let it grow half way down her back.

They say Ruby gets lots of attention with strangers asking to touch it and to take a photo.

The tot's hair is often mistaken for a wig and she is told she looks like cartoon characters from the Lorax and Despicable Me.

Anjel, a stay-at-home mum, from Nashville, Tennessee, US, said: "As soon as she came out we went 'OMG, she has so much hair'."

"She was born with an inch and a half of jet black hair. It's so soft and beautiful."

"They think I put a wig on her."

"No one could have anticipated the icon that is her hair."

Anjel and Matt started the adoption process in April 2023 when they were unable to have a biological child after trying for five years.

The couple had always talked about adopting someday so felt "at peace" when they started looking into it."

Anjel said: "It was something that was always really special to us."

"We were not going to have biological children unless a miracle happened."

They were lucky to be matched in August 2023 and were able to meet the birth mum and be there for the birth.

Anjel said: "It was so perfect. We were really connected."

"It was a beautiful experience."

"We were really really blessed."

Little Ruby was born on January 12, 2024, weighing 7lbs 1oz and shot into the world with a full head of hair.

The new family spent three weeks in Florida, where Ruby was born, before they could travel home.

Anjel said: "I was walking around a lot when she had just been born and people could only see the top of her head."

"They kept asking - 'is that a baby or a puppy?'"

Now Ruby's hair is down to her back and Anjel can plait it into French braids.

Anjel said: "My husband is bald so a lot of people are pretty confused."

"Even her birth mum was shocked by her hair."

"A lot of people want to touch it."

"People want to come and take pictures of it. It's super bouncy and has got lots of volume."

"It gets lots of attention."

Anjel also says Ruby gets lots of comparisons to Disney and cartoon characters.

She said: "A lot of people have talked about the Lorax."

"The little baby from the Proud Family and Despicable Me too."

"She really does look like a cartoon."

"If she's got her hair up she looks like a little dolly."

"It's really fun. It brings joy to everybody."

Anjel also hopes to bring hope to others with her adoption story.

She said: "Adoption has been the greatest gift to us. "

"Her hair is the added spark of joy."
