Dominican Republic - January 11, 2025 Exiled Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo González Urrutia said Friday that he is near to his country and "ready for safe entry," while accusing Nicolás Maduro of completing a "coup d'état" as he was sworn in by the National Assembly. Maduro was sworn in Friday as president for the third time for the period 2025-2031 by the National Assembly, controlled by his ruling party, despite the fact that the majority opposition and many foreign governments recognize González Urrutia as the winner of the July election. In a solemn message to the nation broadcast on X, Edmundo González said that "today in Caracas Maduro has violated the constitution and the sovereign will of the Venezuelans expressed on July 28 and consummated a coup d'état and proclaimed himself dictator.” Camera: HANDOUT.
