Los Angeles, United States - January 19, 2025 Storyline: The two largest fires in the Los Angeles area in California are now more than half contained, yet the exhausted firefighters are bracing for red flag fire weather conditions as more strong gusts and low humidity are expected, according to local officials. The devastating wildfires across the Los Angeles area have so far killed at least 27 people and destroyed more than 12,300 structures since the blazes erupted on Jan 7. Officials announced that the two largest fires, which have obliterated nearly 16,000 hectares and razed entire neighborhoods of Los Angeles, are for the first time both more than half contained. As firefighters continue to make headway in extinguishing the flames, some evacuation orders have begun to be lifted. However, the National Weather Service warned that powerful winds and low humidity will once again bring "dangerous high-end red flag fire weather conditions" starting Monday. As some evacuation orders were lifted, some residents returned to inspect the damage to their homes. Utility workers are currently performing damage assessment and debris removal. However, vast areas of completely destroyed homes remain uncleared, as search and rescue dogs are still scanning the area for hazardous materials or human remains. It will take several days to search through more than 43,000 homes and businesses that have been lost to the fires. Recent improvements in weather conditions have allowed firefighters to enhance the containment lines. In the meantime, fire crews are working around the clock to fully contain these fires ahead of another week of red flag alerts that forecast dry and windy weather conditions.
