Three drone bases have been put into operation in Mianyang, southwest China's Sichuan Province ahead of this year's Spring Festival travel rush.
The bases, operated by the Mianyang section of China Railway, are set for the use of drones for railway inspections and maintenance. These automated devices are gaining popularity in mountainous areas.
SOUNDBITE (Chinese): YAN JIEWEN, Maintenace worker
"Previously, inspections had to be carried out manually by walking across bridges, and at times, this meant descending to the piers, which posed safety risks. Now, with the use of drones for detailed inspections, particularly in mountainous areas, personnel no longer need to climb the mountains. Drones can take over tasks, such as inspecting hazardous rocks, leading to substantial improvements in the quality and efficiency of inspections."
With the bases, the drones can complete an inspection tour within a 10-kilometer radius in 30 minutes.
