West Bank - January 20, 2025 Relatives of released Palestinian hostages have shared their relief at being reunited with their loved ones after the Israel-Hamas ceasefire took effect on Sunday, but despite a sense of optimism, analysts have expressed concern over the long-term stability of the agreement, with the later phases of the deal still to be negotiated. Brokered by Qatar, Egypt and the United States, the ceasefire arrangement marks the first step in a long process aimed at ending the 15-month war in the Gaza Strip. The first stage of the three-phase deal, which will last for six weeks, will see the withdrawal of Israeli forces from densely populated areas, the release of hostages and prisoner exchanges between the two sides, and allow for the safe passage of humanitarian aid to reach war-torn Gaza. After the deal entered into force, Israel released 90 Palestinian detainees while Hamas released three hostages as part of the initial exchange, bringing long-awaited joy to those who have suffered while being separated from their loved ones. Crowds gathered on the streets of the West Bank on Monday to witness the arrival of the Palestinian detainees who had been freed, with many expressing the huge sense of relief as they welcomed back family members. However, despite the major breakthrough in this devastating conflict, concerns remain about the durability of the agreement, and the prospects for real peace. Meanwhile, some Palestinians are worried the Israeli military could be trying to strengthen control over the West Bank despite the Gaza ceasefire and fear the conflict could erupt again at any time.
