STORYLINE:

Tim Buckley, an Australian financial analyst and head of the Climate Energy Finance think tank said that China's 5.0 percent GDP growth in 2024 indicates strong economic performance, benefiting the global South and the world economy.

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): TIM BUCKLEY, Chief of Climate Energy Finance
"China delivered yet again a world-leading 5 percent GDP growth for the Chinese economy when most western commentators were expecting a dramatic slowdown. So I am very pleased to see China has continued to grow off what is an ever larger base. GDP growth in China, was double the growth of the average western developed countries. So that is helping lift lots of people out of poverty. And it's continuing to enhance the global economy."

Buckley has tracked China's economic development for more than a decade. He highlighted China's role in global clean energy initiatives and in promoting the green development of Global South.

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): TIM BUCKLEY, Chief of Climate Energy Finance
"Now why I really like that trend is China leads the world in all zero emissions industries, whether that's wind, solar, grid, smart meters, hydro, electric vehicles, batteries. I see China going global and helping other nations, particularly in the Global South. I am very confident that China will continue to accelerate, but it won't just be leading, by example, it will work with other nations to actually mutually assist each other to actually drive. I see China helping working, collaborating with other countries, from Indonesia, to Turkey, to Australia and to Brazil. Most of those countries, other than Australia, are emerging markets as the Global South. And so to me, that's another strategic leadership that China is doing. Even as America is pulling out of the Paris Agreement, China is actually doing what the Paris Agreement is all about."

Buckley said that China is Australia's largest trading partner, and Western countries, including Australia, should seek cooperation with China to achieve win-win results.

SOUNDBITE 3 (English): TIM BUCKLEY, Chief of Climate Energy Finance
"I say to them, there's no point trying to fight China or compete against China. Let's partner with them, because China is our number one trade partner. And it can be a win-win."
