STORYLINE:
At least 162 bodies have been recovered from the rubble since the ceasefire agreement came into effect in the Gaza Strip, the Civil Defense said Thursday.
"On Wednesday, our teams recovered nine bodies from beneath the debris of homes and buildings targeted by Israeli forces. The recoveries included two bodies from Gaza's northern areas and seven from the southern areas," the Civil Defense said in a press statement.
Yet, the Civil Defense underscores the urgency of the situation, with thousands of bodies still trapped under the rubble of destroyed buildings.
The United Nations estimates that more than 50 million tonnes of rubble need to be removed in Gaza, home to over two million people, at a cost of around 1.2 billion U.S. dollars.
Gaza's Government Media Office, in its first post-ceasefire assessment, reported that 88 percent of the Gaza Strip was damaged, estimating initial losses at over 38 billion dollars.
