5. VARIOUS OF CIVIL DEFENSE TEAMS CONDUCTING SEARCH AND RESCUE OPERATIONS TO RECOVER BODIES UNDER RUBBLE GAZA, PALESTINE - OCT. 20, 2025: Civil defense teams in Gaza launched search and rescue operations on Monday, Oct. 20, to recover bodies of Palestinians trapped under rubble of buildings destroyed in Israeli attacks.

Teams, working with basic equipment in northern Gaza City, try to reach bodies trapped under rubble of a building belonging to a Palestinian family.

A Palestinian in civil defense reported that thousands of bodies remain trapped under rubble.

Since war began, teams faced great difficulties because Israel has not allowed heavy machinery and rescue equipment into area.

At least 97 Palestinians have been killed and 230 injured by the Israeli army since a ceasefire took effect in the Gaza Strip on Oct. 10, including 21 breaches recorded Sunday, said the Gaza government.

In a statement, the Gaza Government Media Office said the “Israeli occupation committed 80 documented violations since the declaration of the ceasefire, in flagrant breach of international humanitarian law.”

It noted that the violations included direct gunfire at civilians, shelling, deliberate targeting, the creation of “fire belts” and the arrest of civilians.

On Sept. 29, US President Donald Trump publicly presented a 20-point plan for Gaza, which included an immediate ceasefire and the phased release of hostages and prisoners.

Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas both agreed to the first phase of the deal, which took effect on Oct. 10. The deal was brokered with the help of mediators from the US, Türkiye, Qatar, and Egypt.

Since October 2023, Israel’s genocidal war has killed more than 68,000 people and injured more than 170,000, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
