Gaza Strip: Thousands of displaced Palestinians stranded on way to homes in northern Gaza
Gaza Strip - January 26, 2025 A large number of displaced Palestinians were stranded on the coastal road in the central Gaza Strip on Sunday, waiting to return to their homes in northern Gaza. The road was supposed to reopen after the second batch of hostages swap on Saturday, but it was delayed by a dispute between Hamas and Israel over the release of a detained Israeli civilian. On Saturday, the Israeli prime minister's office said in a statement that Israel will not allow Palestinian residents to return to their homes in the northern Gaza Strip until the release of Israeli civilian Arbel Yehud, who was scheduled to be freed on Saturday but was replaced by an Israeli female soldier by Hamas. More than 350,000 displaced Palestinians were stranded in many parts of the central Gaza Strip. Some took cars, while many rode in horse-drawn carriages or even walked all the way. Many even carried mattresses, food and tents that accompanied them for more than a year. Although volunteers had continued to deliver water and food for them, it was very challenging to meet their needs given the large number of the displaced people. There were long lines of waiting cars on the road. Tens of thousands of residents of the northern Gaza Strip were forced to leave their homes during the 15-month fighting between Israel and Hamas and move to temporary places in the southern Gaza Strip. We've been waiting here since late afternoon for the road to reopen. We were hungry and cold all night. And there is no bathroom, and this situation is difficult for the elderly, teenagers and children, especially the elderly with chronic diseases and young kids. But we are very much looking forward to returning to the north to see our family and friends and a better life in the future."; 7. Aerial shot of stranded vehicles.
