A fire erupted at the Hyper City Mall in India.

Footage shows thick grey smoke billowing into the air, visible from nearly 1 km away, as the flames engulfed the building in Thane, Maharashtra, on January 28 at 8 am.

Locals spotted the massive smoke in the air, prompting them to immediately report the incident.

Fire brigades and policemen responded and successfully contained the blaze around 9 am.

Police reports said that the fire erupted in the PUMA Factory Outlet Store on the first floor of the mall.

No casualties were reported from the incident.

Authorities' initial investigation revealed that a short circuit may have triggered the blaze, which damaged major shoe stock stored inside.

Recent data show that the country experiences thousands of fire incidents each year, with electrical short circuits being a major cause.
