A delivery rider narrowly escaped injuries as a jeep crashed into a bridge staircase inches from him.

CCTV footage shows the worker onboard a scooter when suddenly an orange vehicle went out of control and ramped up the steps across the pavement in Sichuan, China, on January 6.

The motorcycle rider was shocked as he looked to his side where the crash just happened.

The impact caused parts of the bridge guardrails to fall onto the road, which also almost hit the delivery worker if he had slowed down for a second.

The driver also fled from the scene before authorities could arrive but he was later found by police.

Chengdu Traffic Police officer said: 'We are investigating. The driver has been identified as Li through his vehicle records and security videos.'

Li claimed someone else was driving but later admitted to police he was the one behind the wheel.

He told them he had been distracted and veered off the road into the pavement.

The driver was detained for six days and fined with penalties for escaping.
