Perfect ice circle slowly turns on Russian river
A huge disk of ice slowly spinning on a partially frozen river might seem like the work of someone with a chainsaw and too much time on his hands, but ice circles are a natural phenomenon.
Ice circles form on slow-moving rivers where the river bends, resulting in a large eddy. When water on the surface freezes, the resulting sheets of ice are carried around the eddy. The sheets freeze together and, because of the rotation caused by the eddy, the edges grind against the surrounding ice, forming a perfect circle.
