December 11, 2024. Residents of the Novgorod region in Russia have discovered two large, nearly perfect ice circles on the Lovat River in the Kholmsky District and the Moshenka River in the Demyansky District. Scientists explain that this phenomenon occurs on slow-flowing rivers when layers of water with different temperatures create a swirling motion that forms and rotates broken ice floes into circular shapes. Local residents noted that the massive ice floes appear to be composed of smaller fragments of ice.
