Philippine lawmakers have today voted to impeach Vice President Sara Duterte amid a bitter fallout with political rival President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

The House of Representatives, many of whom are allies of the president, impeached Duterte today over charges of corruption and conspiracy to assassinate Marcos Jr. and his family.

A total of 215 out of 306 legislators - well above the 102 required to pass the bill - signed the ouster.

Footage shows House Secretary General Reginald Velasco taking the petition to the Senate of the Philippines in Metro Manila, which will serve as an impeachment court. A trial date has not yet been set.

If impeached, Sara will be removed from her post and permanently barred from holding public office.

The fiery-tempered Vice President is the daughter of former President Rodrigo Duterte who led a bloody war on drugs in the country. She has been accused of violating the constitution, betraying public trust, and misusing public funds during her term.

The controversial but popular political heir had forged an alliance with Marcos Jr. that saw a landslide win in the 2022 national elections. However, their partnership has since unravelled over various clashes regarding issues such as diplomacy and the country's territorial dispute with China.

Incumbent president Ferdinand Marcos Jr., known by his nickname 'Bongbong', is the son of former dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr., whose decades-long reign was marked by cronyism, rampant corruption, and human rights abuses.

Despite being run out of the country, the Marcos family, headed by matriarch Imelda Marcos who is known for her collection of 3,000 pairs of shoes, successfully returned through a well-oiled misinformation campaign on social media.
