United States - February 05, 2025 Kilauea volcano erupted anew on Wednesday morning, sending lava fountains soaring hundreds of feet into the air. Dramatic video from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) captured the fiery spectacle. The eruption began just after 9 a.m. local time within the summit caldera, Kaluapele, when a small lava flow emerged from the north vent. Less than an hour later, the eruption intensified, with low-level fountaining and a more vigorous lava flow. By the time of the latest update from the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO), about 10% of the floor of Halema‘uma‘u was covered with fresh lava, with fountains reaching approximately 200 feet. Scientists noted that the start of this latest episode was quicker than previous eruptions, but warned that ongoing activity could lead to higher lava fountains as gas-rich flows continue. Kilauea, one of the world’s most active volcanoes, has been intermittently erupting since December 2024, and the current eruption shows no signs of slowing.
