United States - June 05, 2025 Hawaii Volcanoes National Park – Kilauea roared back to life Wednesday night as massive lava fountains erupted nearly 1,000 feet into the sky. This marked the 24th episode of the volcano’s ongoing eruption, which began in December 2024. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the latest burst began just before 9 p.m. local time. Lava fountains are powerful jets of molten rock that shoot high into the air, creating dangerous conditions around the volcano. The eruption also released toxic volcanic gases, including sulfur dioxide, which can drift far from the site and affect air quality downwind. Kilauea’s previous eruption ended on May 25. The volcano remains at an Orange alert level, meaning an eruption is in progress but with limited hazards. Other dangers include falling rocks and sharp volcanic fragments like Pele’s hair, which can travel long distances. Kilauea is one of the most active volcanoes on Earth.
