Idyllic Boracay Island beach turns green from algal bloom
The idyllic Boracay Island beach was empty of tourists as it turned green from algal bloom.
Footage shows the usual crystal clear shores now covered with a thick layer of dark green algae in Aklan, the Philippines, on February 7.
The white sand was also stained so visitors were not able to swim as the popular tourist island is on its annual algae season.
Tourist Romie Sandigan said: 'We walked around the shore to find a clean spot to take a dip, but the algae was too thick everywhere.'
An algal bloom is when algae grow too quickly and form large groups, often making the water look green, red, or brown.
This can happen when there are too many nutrients, like fertilizer, in the water. Some algal blooms can be harmful, as they may release toxins that can hurt animals, fish, and people.
Boracay is a small island in the Philippines, famous for its stunning beaches, clear blue waters, and vibrant nightlife.
