SOUNDBITE (English, simultaneous interpretation): MOUSSA FAKI MAHAMAT, AU Commission Chairperson
"Violent conflicts continue to kill, on a large scale, in Africa. Sudan and the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo are, in all respects, the most poignant, and the most tragic theaters."

He emphasized the importance of promoting good governance, fostering continental collaboration, and advancing socioeconomic development as effective solutions to address Africa's peace and security perils.

The AU Commission chief further called for the strengthening of the international multilateral system on the backdrop of global peace and security challenges.

In his final address to the executive council meeting during his eight-year tenure at the helm of the AU Commission, Faki also highlighted the importance of understanding the political architecture, as well as the roles of peace, security, governance, and partnerships, for the success of the upcoming AU leadership.

The AU executive council meeting, which comprises foreign ministers from AU members and runs from Wednesday to Thursday, is being held under the AU's theme for the year 2025: "Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations."
