Lebanon: UNIFIL attacked as Lebanon prevents Iranian flights from landing
More than 25 people have been arrested in Lebanon after an attack on a convoy of UN peacekeepers on Friday left two wounded. The violence broke out when a group of young men attacked a UN-marked vehicle, assaulted its occupants, and torched three UNIFIL cars. One of those injured was the outgoing deputy force commander of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, or UNIFIL. Lebanon's Interior Minister Ahmad Hajjar on Saturday described the attack on UNIFIL as a crime and said the perpetrators would be prosecuted. He said that there were roadblocks and encroachments on public and private property in the Friday unrest, which descended into a completely unacceptable assault on UNIFIL forces that constitutes a crime punishable by law. "I assure you that prosecution will be pursued for the perpetrators, and we will arrest them. And we have 25 detainees held by the Lebanese Army Intelligence. The investigation will continue. This morning I met with the Prime Minister, and I received his directives and those of the President of the Republic to tighten up on this matter," said the interior minister. The unrest began after the Lebanese government barred two Iranian planes from landing at Beirut's airport, the only operational international airport in Lebanon, following an Israeli claim that Iran had been using the airport to "smuggle funds to Hezbollah." Iran has responded to the banning of its two planes by rejecting Lebanon's request to send two Lebanese planes to Tehran to return Lebanese travelers. "This is not only a Lebanese-Iranian crisis, but a global crisis that threatens civil aviation worldwide. It also violates public law and violates international treaties related to civil aviation," said international law expert Hassan Jouni. The UN said in a statement that attacks on peacekeepers are a flagrant violation of international law and may amount to war crimes. According to Xinhua News Agency, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi and his Lebanese counterpart, Youssef Rajji, on Saturday discussed in a phone call how the "snag" in civil aviation between the two countries might be resolved. The two sides discussed bilateral relations as well as the latest developments in the West Asia region, according to a statement released by the Iranian Foreign Ministry.
