STORYLINE:

Tens of thousands of mourners gathered in Beirut on Sunday for a mass funeral that paid tribute to Hezbollah leaders Hassan Nasrallah and Hashem Safieddine. Israeli warplanes meanwhile conducted low-altitude flights over the Lebanese capital.

The ceremony at the Camille Chamoun Sports City Stadium drew delegations from 70 countries including Iran, Lebanese broadcaster al-Jadeed reported.

Israeli jets flew over the proceedings in what Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz called a deliberate message.

"The Israeli Air Force jets currently flying over Beirut during Hassan Nasrallah's funeral are sending a clear message: Whoever threatens to destroy Israel and attacks Israel -- this will be their fate," Katz said in a statement.

Speaking via video, Hezbollah Secretary-General Sheikh Naim Qassem accused Israel of breaching the U.S. and French-brokered ceasefire agreement that took effect between Israel and Lebanon on Nov. 27, 2024.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic): SHEIKH NAIM QASSEM, Hezbollah Secretary-General
"We will continue to resist, employing the appropriate ways, methods, and timing in accordance with the current phase and the guidance of our leadership. The persistence of our resistance does not imply that we respond or engage in conflict every day. It is our decision to act. We fight when we deem it suitable and exercise patience when it serves our purpose. The resistance endures."

According to Hezbollah, Israeli forces have violated the Feb. 18 withdrawal deadline by maintaining positions at five locations along the Lebanese border.

Nasrallah was killed on Sept. 27, 2024, due to an Israeli bombing of Dahieh in the southern suburb of Beirut. Safieddine, Nasrallah's deputy and successor, was killed the following month in another Israeli airstrike on Dahieh.
