SOUNDBITE (English): MATHIAS ULLER ROTHMANN, Danish researcher at Foshan Xianhu Laboratory
"Hey guys, I'm Mathias.
Every morning I have to scan my face before 8:30.
So this is a prototype of a perovskite solar cell module, but as you can see we can still use the light that's inside, with a little bit of the sunlight coming in through the window. Now we're actually producing electricity while indoors which is super interesting, because it opens up a lot of opportunities for all kinds of usages.
I work on perovskite solar cells which could be considered the next generation of solar cells, and so hopefully we can create enough renewable energy that we can ideally power most of our applications today, without needing coal or gas or other fossil fuels.
I came to China in November 2022. I had a lot of really good support from people around me. And to be honest it wouldn't have been possible without their help. So I'm very grateful for that.
Working here you can really tell that people here in Foshan really want to do stuff. Often people talk about how important it is to accept failure. If you are afraid of failing, you are always going to be doubting yourself. You might know about this very very ambitious net-zero carbon emission targets that China has set for 2060. And this is a huge huge undertaking.
To my knowledge, the Chinese government putting in the most effort in this transition for renewable energy. There's no way that we can envisage a transition into a fully sustainable world in the future without all of the effort, that's being put into through China, and I think that's really really impressive. That's basically one of the main reasons why I came here."
