Rik Mayall tribute shop opens in Droitwich ahead of festival
High Street, Droitwich, Worcestershire, UK. 24th February 2025. A retail store in Droitwich's historic High Street, has been transformed into Rik Mayall's Comedy Emporium - a tribute shop to the local celebrity. It's intension is to be a piece of art in the style of a traditional joke shop and fancy dress display celebrating the comedian's life and career. Rik Mayall was a comedian, writer and actor most notable for his roles in The Young Ones, Drop Dead Fred, and Bottom before his death in 2014. The star grew up in Droitwich and even spent time on the town's Norbury Theatre Stage. The new art has been unveiled today ahead of the town's first-ever Rik Mayall Comedy Festival, which will take place between May 31 and June 7, 2025. A spokesperson for Wychavon District Council previously said: "We are beyond excited. "This project is not just about art; it's about community and laughter, and it will honour a true comedic genius who has touched the hearts of many. "We invite everyone to come and experience this colourful homage that captures the spirit of Rik Mayall." The line-up for first Rik Mayall Comedy Festival, due to run in Droitwich Spa has been announced. The eight-day event is set to feature a show from Taskmaster host Greg Davies, who appeared alongside the Young Ones star in his Channel 4 sitcom Man Down. Mayall died within a year of the first series airing, in June 2024. Peter Richardson, a founding member of The Comic Strip Presents..., of which Mayall was an original cast member, will also appear, as will Helen Lederer who worked with Mayall on shows such as Happy Families and Bottom. Other performers bringing stand-up shows to Norbury Theatre as part of the Worcestershire-based festival include Shaparak Khorsandi, Red Richardson, Paul Foot and Laura Smyth.
