This is the shocking moment a car plunged into a sinkhole outside shops in Taiwan.

The landscaped garden area suddenly caved in, swallowing a parked white Lexus sedan on Changchun Road in Zhudong Township, Hsinchu County, on February 27.

Terrifying CCTV footage shows the luxury car plummeting into the massive hole, along with trees and plants, as the ground beneath it gave way.

No injuries were reported from the accident.

A police investigation revealed that the collapse was caused by the deterioration of steel beams supporting the platform.

Zhudong Town Mayor Guo Yuanzhang said: 'The collapsed land was owned by the State-Owned Property Administration.

'Early developers had occupied the state-owned land to construct platforms and roads for parking, but only steel beams were installed to support the structure.

'Beneath the site was a sand pit creek, leaving the platform in a suspended state. Over time, the ageing steel beams deteriorated due to a lack of maintenance, leading to the ground collapse.'

The Zhudong Township Office stated that it would hold the builders accountable, install guardrails, and convert the site into a drainage area with enhanced safety measures.
