This is the shocking moment a couple plunged into an abyss when a sinkhole suddenly opened up beneath them.

CCTV footage shows the pair holding hands as they strolled along Vibhavadi Road in Bangkok, Thailand, on March 9, when the pavement unexpectedly gave way.

The man can be seen helping his partner back up after the fall, while visibly stunned bystanders stand frozen in disbelief at what had just happened.

The individuals reportedly did not sustain any serious injuries from the incident.

An enraged onlooker said: 'The relevant agencies must take legal action. What if this had happened to an elderly person? It would have been very dangerous.'

Local media reported that the sidewalk had only been completed a month earlier.

Authorities arrived at the scene to assess the damage. An initial investigation found that the collapse occurred at the junction between the public sidewalk and a private commercial building.

A storm drainage system had been installed beneath the walkway to mitigate flooding, but a leaking pipe joint allowed water to seep through, gradually eroding the sand foundation. Over time, this created a hollow space beneath the pavement, ultimately causing it to collapse.
